What is a heater matrix?

A heater matrix, also known as a heater core, is a component in a vehicle's heating system that functions like a small radiator. It's typically located inside the dashboard and is responsible for providing warm air to the cabin. Here's how it works:
Hot coolant from the engine circulates through the heater matrix's tubes. Air is blown over these tubes by a fan (usually the blower motor), and as the air passes over the warm tubes, it heats up. This warm air is then directed into the vehicle's interior through vents, providing heat for the passengers.
The heater matrix is connected to the engine's cooling system via hoses, and its operation is often controlled by a valve that regulates the flow of coolant through it, allowing the driver to adjust the temperature. If it becomes clogged or leaks, you might notice issues like insufficient heat, a foggy windshield, or even coolant smells inside the car.
